Three Dimentional Design

Hello everyone. These next couple of pictures are of my 3-D. design class I took this past semester. We worked with a variety of materials, everything from metal wire to wood, plaster, paper, material and much more!

Here is one of my earlier projects, a bread/toaster. The project was to take two objects that relate and morph them into one. This is made out of clay with some oil paint over the top.
Here is my self-portrait box, we basically had to make a 'box' of any kind that took into consideration the use of the interior vs. exterior. I chose to do my self-portrait in and on a shell which I made out of wire and paper mache. I used a combination of maps from the different states I had lived in in the US(Wisconsin, Colorado and Illinois) and maps from South Africa. On the inside I have different places and words in Afrikaans that have meaning to me.

Whittling! what a great word to say and I got to do loads of it on this next project. Our assignment was to make a spoon out of a block of wood. My design is a viking ship with waves at the end/handle.

This is my plaster piece. We casted and carved away at our (very hard) piece of plaster. (It's soft for about 5-8 minutes and then it gets really hard.) We used tools ranging from files and sandpaper. This design is meant to draw the eye around, encouraging you to want to view the piece from all sides.

Drawing II

For drawing II we had even more freedom. We did a variety of collages and some color chalk too.

One of the first projects we attempted was doing a self-portrait. I was trying to get a slightly different angle than a normal frontal view. (No, I'm not angry :) )

This is my self-portrait relief piece that I did in red clay, ink, glue and white ocean sand.

This is done in color chalk(very messy) from a still life our teacher set up for us.

Here are a couple of still-life sketches that were done more quickly, one of a plaster mold (head) and Mr. Skeleton.

Another project that we had in Drawing II was to keep a sketch journal of sketches. The goal was to make 4 weekly sketches spending about 5-10 minutes at a time. Here are a couple of examples:

Drawing 1

Here are some examples of things I did in Drawing 1. We worked in a range of medium, from standard pencil to conte crayon, chalks, ink and collage.

This ink and color pencil sketch is a combination of two artists to make a new image.

This next image is using shoes to form an interesting composition. I used my wedding shoe :)

Here is a semi-quick sketch profile of Jason.

Here is one of our quicker sketches we did in class, this one is obviously of a rocking chair.

Purpose Statement

This blog is available to the Internet for the purpose of providing family and friends with a means to see some of the things I'm creating in my art classes at school. I'll categorize them by classes.

I started my first semester at Parkland College with 2D design and drawing I. This past semester, I had 3D design and drawing II. In the coming semester, I will have water color painting and metalwork/jewelry design.

Let me start:

For 2D design, we worked a lot with black and white. Using pen, pencil, marker, ink and some collage. We mostly did designs, patterns, and the basic principles of design. Here are a couple examples of work that I did.

This project was done by making small dots on the page, the entire page is made out of little dots, over and over and over and over again...

Here is a morph project, where you take an image, distort it and then change it in a series of blocks, mine reads from top left to bottom left.

This was a self portrait done in shades of gray, this poster is huge and took an incredibly long time to finish since each square is so small.

This triangle shaped image was done in black color pencil.

The following image dealt with the illusion of movement, and had to be done with black paper on a white surface.

Finally, our final project was making a book! Not only did you make a book, but you had to design a plan and then use color pencil to create images that would look cohesive, but also be viewed page by page. Here it is ...finally some COLOR!!! or for those in S. Africa COLOUR!!!
